Just in Time for Woman’s History month, a celebration of some of the strong women in Star Wars Old Republic era.
From the most ancient of times before the Republic to its very end before it became the Galactic Empire, brave woman have stood up for their beliefs and supported others. These are some of them, heroes, villains and the fringe types that live in between.
Lanoree Brock
This Je’daii Ranger of the ancient era lived before the division before war with light and dark caused the order to remade as the Jedi. Her metal sword and ship were her closest friends. Fighting, negotiating and traveling the Tython system, nothing challenged her more than facing her own brother, who was so determined to escape the Tython system their ancestors had been trapped in that he endangered the system.

Shae Koda
Tython Je’daii journeyer she fought the Rakatan empire when it invaded Tython and dared fall for the Force Hound Xesh. She helped draw him back the the light when he despaired, remembering his enslavement.

Twilek Je’daii journeyer, her skill was in telekinesis and force seeing. Her mother was Jedaii, her cousin was too. She balanced duty the Order with dealing with a criminal father.

Trill
This female force hound was very close to Xesh when they grew up, but their Rakatan Masters forced betrayal on them. Hating Xesh and furious that he bested her in battle, it was she who first sensed Tython and its Jedaii. When Xesh went missing there, she pursued him, blending in with the natives and seeming to help against the Rakata. She still served the Rakata however and reported all she learned to them.

Nomi Da Boda AKA Sunrider
A simple wife of a Jedi with a daughter, until her husband was murdered. Hearing her husband’s spirit she picked up the lightsaber and slew his killers before they could harm her or their daughter. She then trained under the Jedi master she sought and became one of the most powerful Jedi and a leader of her age. She fought in the Great Sith War. Nomi also lent her wisdom and appearance to a hologram in one of the Jedi Noetikons, a special kind of holocron meant to interact with other Noetikons to form a group of their very wisest and greatest Jedi Masters.

Vima Sunrider
The daughter of Andur and Nomi, she was raised among the Jedi. Her mother being so busy with Jedi business, this impatiant young Jedi would be the one who sought the fallen Uliq Qel Droma and drew him all the way back into the light.

Sylvar
The cathar Jedi was apprentice to Vodo Siosk Baas and fought against Exar Kun. She was suspicious of Exar Kun’s motives even when they trained together and very disturbed by his apparent bias against all non humans (odd, given his Master was not human). She stood up against her mate Crado when he chose to follow Kun. Her people were so proud of her they held parades and created monuments in her honor. She bore a grudge for many years against those involved with Crado’s fall to the Dark Side who were involved with Exar Kun, until she faced the redeemed Uliq Qel Droma.

Jori Daragon
This early hyperspace explorer lost both parents when they tried to delivers supplies to soldiers and were caught in a crossfire. Desperate to escape creditors and assassins, Jori with her brother accidentally discovered the Sith Empire. Forced to escape alone, Jori was locked up on returning for taking their ship without paying for repairs. She broke prison to warn Empress Teta and the Jedi about the Sith. Her horror at Gav helping the Sith convinced him he was wrong and led to his helping stop them at the cost of his own life.

Empress Teta
She united the worlds of the Koros system in peace under the Republic. The system was renamed for her. When the Sith Empire attacked she was one of the only ones who heeded the Jedi premonitions of danger as well as the young escaped prisoner Jori. She prepared for war and helped stop the Sith.

Aleema Keto
This seductress was a dark descendent of Empress Teta, who along with her cousin Satal overthrew the government of their home in a bloody coup using dark side powers. The minor powers they dabbled in were amplified when they went to Onderon while the battle against the Freedon Nadd cultists was going on. They came away with a deadly Sith book. Aleema’s powers leaned to illusion and sorcery. Her attack was partly foiled by Nomi, but succeeded in harming Uliq with Sith magic. It was she who helped seduce him when he landed and tried to infiltrate the Krath. Ultimately though he turned against her after she betrayed him.

Princess Galia
Daughter of the King Ommin and Queen Amanoa, she broke the mold of the Dark Side royalty by falling in love with Orin Kira, leader of the beast riders and helping the Jedi overthrown the followers of Freedon Nadd.

This Arkanian had a rough life as a slave and broke free with the aid of a half crazy genius inventor known as Camper. They were hiding in a ship in a junkyard when they were exposed accidentally by Zayne Carrik to their opponents. They helped each other escape and she even pretended to be a Jedi once, as well as helping with other con jobs. Zayne helped her deal with her past and fell in love. She fought against Mandalorians and alongside Jedi.

Bastila Shan
A promising young Jedi her mastery of battle meditation was instrumental in the war against Revan and Malek. She helped stop Revan and eventually, as he slowly regained memory and power, aided his quest to stop Malak. Malak captured her and for a brief time turned her. But Revan found her and his love drew her back, together they stopped the Star Forge and Malek. They married and had a son. When Revan vanished, she was left to raise their son alone.

The Cathar Jedi briefly fell to the dark side and turned on her Jedi Master. But Revan, still lacking his memory, found her and drew her back into the light. She aided him in his quest to destroy the Star Forge, overcoming her anger at the slavers and bigots who had destroyed her family.

Mission Vao
Mission was just a teenager when left alone by her brother on Taris. She hooked up with Zaalbar (Big Z) a wookiee and they became a team, living by their wits. The young scoundrel hooks up with an amnesiac Revan when he’s searching for Bastila on Taris and Big Z has been taken prisoner. Her stealth skills prove invaluable in his quest to find and stop the Star Forge and Malak. She and Big Z went on to have a successful import/export business after the war.

Kreia / Darth Traya
She abandoned the Jedi way after the Jedi chose to blame her for her most famous padawan, Revan’s actions in encouraging Jedi to rebel against the Council to fight in the Mandalorean war. Discovering Malachor V she fell to the Dark Side and formed a Sith triumvirate with Darth Sion and Darth Nihilus, but they too, cast her out. She developed a hatred for not only Jedi and Sith but for the Force and it’s ‘will’. She determined to use the Jedi Exile, Meetra Surik and her unique situation with the Force to destroy the Force itself.

Meetra Surik AKA The Exile
Meetra followed Revan and Malak into the Mandalorian War. It had a terrible effect on her, especially the catastrophic events on the world of Malachor V that would alter her very connection to the Force. Her strong ability to connect with people caused a ‘wound’ in the Force, the devastating pain of being in proximity and directly involved with the death and destruction of the world. On her return to Republic space she found the Jedi virtually wiped out in spite of Revan’s victory over Malak and saving of the Republic. The Sith who had escaped the destruction were hunting Jedi, and they still considered her one. This set her on course for the truth about what had happened to her, about Revan’s former Master, and Malachor V. Daring to remember her Jedi training, Meetra confronted Sion, a Sith who was so mortally injured he was held alive only by the Dark side and his own will, and Nihilus, whose hunger could wipe out whole worlds. Finally it would set her against the very one who had helped her remember her powers, Kreia.

Queen Talia
Descendant of Galia, the ruler of Onderon’s home managed to escape the worst of the Jedi Civil War. But her treacherous officer General Vaklu with surviving Sith plotted to overthrow her and secede from the war weary Republic. After fomenting unrest he finally had the backing he needed to storm the castle. He came to find her blow by blow with swords until the Exile managed to break through his army and he was dealt with for his treason.

Satele Shan
Descendent of Bastila and Revan, this Jedi went on to become a grand Master, surviving against the likes of Darth Malgus and the reborn Revan. She also faced the Zakuul Invasion, eventually going into Exile but giving advice to the Outlander when discovered.
It was Satele with Nichos Mar that warned the Rebublic of the return of the Sith – they had killed her Master and chased the Republic away from Korriban. She had a son, fathered by Jace Malcolm who she gave up to be raised by her Jedi Master. She realized with her powers the temptation to do literally anything to protect him would be too strong, and she feared Jace’s increased anger and darkness.

This twilek from Taris was supreme chancellor when the Sith broke the truce. She had a hard line anti sith stance. She doesn’t like secrets kept from her, but her goal is protection of the Republic from those she considers enemies and every decision is based on this.

This rough tough street scoundrel twilek was into gangs when found by Theron Shan and the Jedi who raised him, Ngani Zo. While initially she was arrested, she did help Theron and Ngani escape the Sith and stop Darth Mekhis. She also sent stood up to her employers and warned Satele Shan that Theron Shan and Gnost Dural were going to take on the Ascendent Spear to trick it to attack the fleet so they should destroy it.

Jedi Padawan of Master Kiwiks, she soon teams up with Master Orgus’s former padawan in a quest to stop Darth Angral’s super weapon. She was a street thief on Nar Shaddaa just trying to survive when the Jedi took her in, but few knew until Orgus’s padawan discovered that she’d once been what they called a ‘Child of the Emperor’. She had been fleeing Korriban and hiding from her ‘siblings’ when she had been discovered. This made some of the Council suspect her, but her insider information helped them gather clues to an internal threat. With the help of the Jedi she travelled with, she would be set on a collison course with the Sith Emperor himself.

This impressive Mando leader also is known as Flame, both having flame colored hair and using fire as a weapon. She aided the Sith in their attack on Coruscant and the Jedi Temple. Ultimately she aids in the battle against the reborn Revan as well, unwilling to miss out on a good fight and allies with the Outlander against Zakuul.

This wily dowager Sith juggled the power of her rule by doling out to her grandchildren rewards, depending on who conquered the most. She also set out to wipe out those not related utterly. She did however also protect the twin children that were unable to stand against the others.

Rain /Zannah
As a child Rain was taken with her cousins by the jedi for training during war. Separated in a disaster, she survived with the aid of the native bouncers of Ruusan. but when her rescuer was killed by a Jedi mistaking it for a threat, she turned on him and her fledgling powers killed the unprepared Jedi. She was discovered immediately by Darth Bane who had just plotted to destroy the weakened Sith and resurrect it with the rule of 2. She quickly gained a taste for power and went on to become his apprentice. Eventually, she would defeat him and in turn become the Master with an apprentice, continuing the rule of two that culminated with Palpatine.

This elegant long lived Jedi was at her peak in the Old Republic, surviving the Clone Wars, evading Order 66 with Tholme and reuniting with the New Jedi Order sometime before Krayt’s empire rose.

Growing up in the Temple beside Qui-Gon Jinn, she was fiercely determined and independent. She and Qui-Gon were quietly in love though neither realized it for some time. She was blinded on a mission, making her reluctant to take on a padawan. Her blindness filled her with a need to prove herself and her mothering nature was reluctant to be the protected rather than protector. When Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon had a falling out, it was she who helped them resolve their differences. Her research skills proved invaluable to the 2 on many a mission. Eventually she did accept Padawan Bant. Tahl was murdered not long after she and Qui-Gon finally acknowledged their love for each other. She was greatly honored.

Soara Antana
A lightsaber master, this jedi warrior had skill and courage. She trained Darra Thel Tanis as a Jedi and specially tutored Anakin Skywalker. She called off the tutoring when she realized that Anakin’s ability to see how his emotions were affecting his judgement in battle were a liability. This led to him being even more determined to prove himself.

Siri Tachi
Trained by Master Adi Gallia, she grew up with Obi-Wan Kenobi and even has a young girl was fiercely determined and one of the best fighters in her generation. Daring to take on challenges, she refused to back down when she knew she was right. Nonetheless she didn’t hesitate to admit she’d been wrong either. Siri bravely went undercover as an assistant slaver to bring down the entire slaver’s nest. She went on to train a padawan, Ferus Olin, who left the Order after a disaster he blamed himself for. She never took another. She sacrificed her life fighting Separatists in the clone wars.

Jenna Zan Arbor
This immoral scientist was not satisfied with a life of fighting for funding for noble causes. Deciding to make sure she was well funded, she took to introducing illness just so she could cure it and make a fortune. She also came off looking like a hero. Her secret ambition was to scientifically study the Force and this is where she made a mistake: she committed murder and this led to Qui-Gon Jinn’s capture. Obi-Wan, Siri and Adi Gallia would go on to rescue him and eventually expose her. But she wasn’t done yet. Years later she worked for the Empire. Vader himself employed her seeking a way to block memories in a Force user. Ultimately her successful drug was used on her by Ferus Olin and crew, thereby deleting her memory and the threat she posed.

An’ya Kura AKA Dark woman
This Jedi was so determined to be unattached she even gave up her name. It was she who discovered future Jedi Council Master Ki-Adi-Mundi as a child and brought him to the Temple. When her difficult padawan Aurra Sing was lost to pirates she felt it the will of the Force and did not pursue. She regretted this years later when the girl became a Jedi Killer and bounty hunter. Surviving Order 66 she went on to face Vader – and realize that he still had the potential to be Anakin Skywalker.

This unscrupulous Sorrusian bounty hunter took on any challenge, legal or not. Her skill was with a whip that had both laser and wire modes. She was not above poisoning or assassination. She worked fairly often for Jenna Zan Arbor. She also took pride in her work and held a grudge: Obi-Wan Kenobi bested her by escaping as a mere boy. She was stopped at last by Adi Gallia

Etain Tur-Murkan
A mere padawan and not the most skilled when she met Darman, the clone trooper. She had been cut off when the war started, her less than disciplined Master killed in a fight leaving her trapped on planet and out of touch. She went on to appreciate the clones and become very concerned about how they were treated as canon fodder, basically grown to fight. She was also concerned for how the Jedi handled it. She in turn earned the troops respect for relating to them on their terms. Coming to respect the Mandalorean Kal Skirata in spite of his rocky relationship with Jedi, she and Darman secretly married and she had a child. She waited until the last moment to resign her commission and was caught on Coruscant when Order 66 hit.

Scout Tallisibeth Endwandung-Esterhazy
The padawan only had marginal Force skill and many thought she’d be sent to the agricorp. The one Master who accepted her as padawan died before she could go with her for a single mission: at Geonosis. But Scout made up for lack of Force with sheer determination and focused research in combat and other skills. Winning what may have been the final padawan tournament ever, she won herself a new Master Jai Maruk, courtesy of a bet he lost with Master Yoda. Ultimately he learned more from her, than she from him. She survived an attack by Ventress early on and managed to escape Order 66. She was last seen on Ord Mantell hiding with Skirata’s family.

This determined nurse survived a clone wars war zone and pursued the man she loved in spite of his world’s antiquated ideas on marrying an offworlder. Nonetheless when she realized how badly he’d be ostracized, she backed off. He in turn refused to allow others to tell them how to live and they went on together.

Darsha Assant
This Jedi padawan seemed to fail her Jedi trials. But when her Master returned with her to the scene of the failure she found her trial had just begun. They were among the first Jedi to spot the Sith Darth Maul. Her master killed she went on the run with Jax Pavan and I5, trying to get word to the Temple about the threat. It wasn’t helped that she had lost all her gear but her lightsaber and was traveling the underworld of Coruscant gang territory with a man who had reason to hate Jedi. She faced the challenge with courage that made a lasting impression on Pavan and I5.

Khaleen Hentz

Her past largely a mystery, Khaleen was a woman of street smarts who falls in love with the man they called Korto Vos: an undercover Jedi better known as Quinlan who was acting as a spy. Starting with the underworld, he went on to infiltrate Dooku’s group as a fallen Jedi. Khaleen risked prison and death to be with him and loyally helped keep communication open between Jedi Master Tholme and Quinlan. She and Quinlan married and had a child, escaping Order 66 together.

Aayla Secura
Trained by Quinlan Vos and then Tholme, she was a child destined for slavery when the boy Quinlan discovered her Force sensitivity. Brought into the Order, he would become her master. They were a formidable team until the trail of criminals led them to Ryloth where they were dosed with spice that caused amnesia. Aayla freed the dark Jedi Anzati, lured by the dark side of the Force and lack of memory. But Quinlan had been found and was relearning what he’d lost and deep need to find her led him to her rescue. Aayla went on to train under Tholme, since both she and Vos needed to recover. They helped Quinlan stay balanced in the light, just barely, when he was undercover flirting with darkness. Aayla refused to give up on him. She fought alongside Anakin Skywalker and others in the Clone Wars and died in Order 66.

Aurra Sing
This former Jedi padawan of unknown ancestry was kidnapped by Anzati pirates and given an implant which helped her ‘taste’ fear. She went on to become not only a bounty hunter but a known Jedi killer, passionate with revenge for their abandoning her. She was active during the Clone Wars but captured and imprisoned. Many years after the Vong war she was on the loose again.

Lorana Jinzler
Padawan of Jorus C’baoth, she suffered an inferiority complex due to his apparent lack of confidence in her. Nonetheless he promoted her to Jedi Knight to go on Outbound Flight with him. Unexpectedly meeting her brother and finding him hostile, she agreed to go. She found herself caught between his increasingly tyrannical behavior and the other Jedi who were growing concerned about him breaking code and imposing his will on people. She was one of the only survivors when C’baoth escalated his disagreement with the Chiss Thrawn and it was she who helped the people escape and crash land on a remote world. Decades later few knew of her sacrifice, or that they owed their lives to her.

Barriss Offee

Trained as a Jedi healer, Barriss once showed her commitment by healing the mentally addled ansionians who kidnapped her. This gained her their loyalty. Nonetheless she was capable of anger – particularly when she met the Hutt that ordered it. It was Barriss who befriended the little Tooqui who proved an invaluable ally. She stood alongside Masters Luminara and Obi-Wan and fellow Padawan Anakin in a fight where they could not kill, to bring a peace treaty to keep Ansion in the Republic. During the Clone Wars her skills as healer led her to Rimsoos on Drongar where both her medical and investigative skills were tested. She sought both to heal the wounded soldiers and find a spy. She was also faced with the temptation of a new discovery: a form of the miracle drug Bota that enhanced Force powers. On Ilum she and her Master were nearly buried alive in the crystal caves when Luminara declared her training complete, moments before Separatist chameleon droids attached.

Asaaj Ventress

When the man who raised her was killed, Ventress was discovered by a lost Jedi. The Jedi trained her and helped stand up to the warlords of her homeworld, Rattattaki. When he was murdered she sought revenge on those that harmed him. Blaming the Jedi for abandoning him, she made her way offworld to Dooku’s gladiator arena. Convincing him of her skills and desire to be a Sith, she served with him. She consistently challenged both Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker, threatening all they held dear. She successfully killed many Jedi.
